In the gentle and featureless landscape of Eastern Ukraine, the outline of World War Three is taking shape.

Whipped up by the Kremlin propaganda machine, and led by Russian military intelligence, people are erecting road-blocks, storming police stations, and ripping down their country's flag.

They are demolishing not just their own country-bankrupt, ill-run and beleaguered-but also the post-war European security order which has kept us safe and free.

Mr Putin is striking at the heart of the West: our ability to work with allies in defence against common threats.

During the Cold War, and after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the civilised countries of the world stood together.

Now they stand divided, humiliated and powerless in the face of Russia's land grabs. The "West" as we once knew it no longer exists.
